11 Plus Tutoring offers a summer booster course for students in Caldy each August every year, delivering intensive, focused revision to prepare Year 5 students for the Wirral Admissions Test in September. Caldy sits directly alongside West Kirby, putting local families in one of the closest catchments to Calday Grange Grammar School and West Kirby Grammar School, two of the four schools in the Wirral Consortium that use the same Quest Assessment exam.
The summer before the 11 Plus exam is the period that genuinely shapes how ready Year 5 students feel come September. For Caldy families, this period matters even more given how competitive entry to Calday Grange and West Kirby Grammar tends to be. August gives children the freedom to work consistently on verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and Maths, building the pace needed to achieve a standardised score above the qualifying mark.
Check out our 11 Plus Tuition page for comprehensive year-long preparation.
Why Families in Caldy Seek the 11 Plus Summer Booster Course
Exam practice gap
Knowing the syllabus thoroughly does not always lead to exam success, which is why mock exam practice is essential for identifying and addressing this gap early.
Timing and speed
Working efficiently against the clock is a skill that needs to be trained, and many children only discover how much timing and speed matter once they are sitting a full paper.
Reasoning subjects
Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning sit outside what schools normally teach, meaning children need targeted support to feel comfortable tackling these question types.
Self-study plateau
It is easy for revision to lose momentum over the summer holidays, and without a clear structure in place, many students hit a plateau that they struggle to overcome.
Confidence-building
Repeated, supported exam practice allows children to enter the test with genuine confidence rather than relying on luck.
Structured August learning
Parents in Caldy value having a structured plan for August, with expert-led sessions that keep their child engaged and on track in the final stretch.

Why the 11 Plus Summer Booster Course Matters for Caldy Families
Registration for the Wirral grammar school assessment closes on 1 June 2026. The Quest Assessment takes place on Tuesday, 15 September 2026. Year 5 students who continue timed practice during August are often better prepared for the pace and pressure of the real exam.
Calday Grange Grammar School is a highly sought-after boys’ grammar school founded in 1636, admitting 210 boys in Year 7 and applying oversubscription criteria that prioritise looked-after children first, then medical or social needs, then siblings, and finally allocate the remaining places by the shortest walking distance from home to school.
West Kirby Grammar School admits 180 girls in Year 7 and applies oversubscription criteria in the same order, with up to 18 places reserved for girls eligible for Free School Meals, ranked by distance. Sisters of current pupils are prioritised before the remaining places are allocated by the shortest safe walking distance.
The Wirral Admissions Test consists of two multiple-choice papers, each approximately 60 minutes long, covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning (including spatial reasoning), and Maths. Our course covers the key areas of preparation children need for the test.
According to Wirral Council’s admissions guidance, both schools require a qualifying standardised score, but meeting this standard does not guarantee a place, as both schools are consistently oversubscribed with children who meet it.
