What Is the 11 Plus Consortium?

In the UK, a consortium refers to a collective of two or more Grammar Schools collaborating on the same application process. These schools adhere to a shared 11 Plus test, exam dates, and exam provider. Schools in a Consortium tend to be in the same region.

The purpose of forming a consortium is to minimise the number of tests a child needs to take in order to be considered for any Grammar School within a particular area.

Currently, there are approximately 25 formal and informal consortia of schools in operation across the country. These consortia oversee the Year 7 admission process for Grammar Schools in specific regions. The formal consortia are listed below:

Essex 11 Plus Consortium

The CSSE, which stands for Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex, consists of 10 Grammar Schools located in the Essex region. These schools accept students based on an examination that assesses their proficiency in English and Mathematics.

Bexley 11 Plus Consortium

The Bexley Grammar School Consortium brings together four schools: Bexley Grammar School, Beths Grammar School, Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School, and Townley Grammar School. Their examination follows the CEM format, which evaluates students’ Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills.

Buckinghamshire 11 Plus Consortium

The Buckinghamshire Grammar School Consortium encompasses a total of 13 schools. These schools admit pupils based on their Secondary Transfer Test (SET) performance and the 11 Plus test consists of two papers.

The 11 Plus Transfer Test is weighted as follows:

  • Verbal Ability – 50%
  • Numerical Ability – 25%

Gloucestershire 11 Plus Consortium

Gloucestershire Grammar Schools use the 11 Plus exam from GL Assessment. It has a County Council that coordinates admission to all seven schools.

The Lincolnshire Grammar School Consortium is one of the larger consortiums comprising 15 grammar schools. Their 11 Plus test comprises two multiple-choice papers assessing students’ Verbal, Non-Verbal, and Spatial Reasoning abilities.

Kent 11 Plus Consortium

The Kent Consortium is composed of the largest number of schools (31) in the country, as Kent currently holds the title of the largest Grammar School region. The examination conducted by the Consortium consists of three sections.

Slough 11 Plus Consortium

There are four grammar schools in the Slough Grammar School Consortium. Langley Grammar School, Herschel Grammar School, St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School and Upton Court Grammar School all administer the 11 Plus exam in CEM format, testing Verbal, Non-Verbal and Numerical Reasoning skills.

The Hertfordshire Consortium administers the 11 Plus exam, which comprises a Maths test and a Verbal Reasoning paper. Both of these exams are designed by GL Assessment.

The recently formed coalition of schools within the West Midlands region aims to simplify the admission process across its member institutions. Through this collaboration, students can compete for a spot at multiple Grammar Schools by taking a single unified test. The West Midlands 11 Plus examination assesses proficiencies in the following areas:

  • English Comprehension
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal + Spatial Reasoning
  • Mathematics

Each segment lasts approximately 50 minutes

Birmingham 11 Plus Consortium

The Birmingham Grammar School Consortium consists of 8 Grammar Schools in the region. These schools utilise the CEM format exam, developed by Cambridge Assessment, as the assessment method for admissions.

The Consortium of Grammar Schools in Shropshire, Walsall, and Wolverhampton comprises five schools utilising the CEM examination for their 11 Plus admissions. The registration deadline for this examination is in July.

Wirral and Liverpool 11 Plus Consortium

The Wirral and Liverpool Grammar Schools consist of six Grammar Schools in Wirral and one in Liverpool. The admissions process in this region varies depending on the area. In Wirral, most schools utilise the GL Assessment for their exams, while The Blue Coat School in Liverpool uses their own examination papers.

Devon 11 Plus Consortium

Devon is home to seven Grammar Schools, and the admissions process involves three Local Authorities (LA): Devon County Council, Plymouth, and Torbay, which can make it a bit confusing. Moreover, the examination formats vary, with Devon and Torbay employing the CEM (Cambridge Assessment) method, while Plymouth utilises the GL Assessment approach.

In the Medway region, there are six Grammar Schools. The examination conducted by the Medway Consortium assesses students’ abilities in Verbal Reasoning, Maths, and English.

The Redbridge Consortium in the London Borough of Redbridge comprises two Grammar Schools: Ilford County High School and Woodford County High School for Girls. The 11 Plus exam administered by the consortium follows the GL Assessment format.

Berkshire 11 Plus Consortium

Within the Berkshire Consortium, admission to Kendrick School through the 11 Plus is also conducted using the CEM exam. This exam evaluates students’ Verbal, Non-Verbal, and Numerical skills. On the other hand, Reading School for Boys assesses students through a Maths test, an English test, and a Creative Writing paper.

The Dorset Grammar School Consortium comprises four schools in the South West region: Bournemouth School, Bournemouth School for Girls, Parkstone Grammar School, and Poole Grammar School. Their 11 Plus exam consists of three multiple-choice Maths, English, and Verbal Reasoning tests.

Barnet and Enfield 11 Plus Consortium

Henrietta Barnett School, Queen Elizabeth’s School in Barnet, and The Latymer School in Enfield admit pupils based on their performance in the 11 Plus exam. It is important to note that these schools do not have a shared examination. The exam requirements and format vary at each school.

Bromley 11 Plus Consortium

In the London Borough of Bromley, there are currently two Grammar Schools. Among them are Newstead Wood School, where the 11 Plus exam is a multiple-choice assessment. The second is St. Olave’s Grammar School, which conducts the Selective Eligibility Test (SET) and a subsequent round of testing.

Lancashire and Cumbria 11 Plus Consortium

The Lancashire and Cumbria group comprises five schools. The 11+ exam varies between the two regions, with Lancashire utilising the GL Assessment, while Cumbria opts for the CEM format.

Surrey 11 Plus Consortium

The Surrey Grammar Schools are divided into two areas, Kingston-upon-Thames and Sutton. The examination process in these areas varies, although most schools follow a two-stage exam format. In Sutton schools, the first round test is known as the Selective Eligibility Test. Similarly, both Tiffin schools share a common first-round test.
