Online 11 Plus Tutoring for Year 3, 4 and 5 Students in Ullswater Valley

Every child starts preparation from a different place, and our approach reflects that rather than assuming a fixed starting point. In Year 3, lessons stay well away from formal exam content. Instead, tutors concentrate on helping students master reading, writing and number skills.

By Year 4, preparation takes on more shape. Children begin working with short written-response questions and a broader spread of subject content, since QEGS’s current assessment draws on far more than English and Maths alone.

Year 5 is where students sit full-time mock exams, work on specific weak spots, and improve speed and accuracy so that by the time September arrives in Year 6, nothing about the format feels unfamiliar.

Families across the valley are working towards one school:

Our one-on-one English, Maths, Vocabulary, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning lessons, regular assessments, and continuous progress monitoring ensure every child develops the academic knowledge, confidence and accuracy needed to perform to the best of their ability.

Which Exam Papers Does Our 11 Plus Tuition Prepare Students for?

Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) moved away from its older GL Assessment test recently and now uses an FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) Entrance Test, which is based on the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum and assesses learning up to the end of Year 5 with 3 papers, each lasting 45–60 minutes.

Our tutors begin by understanding your preferred Grammar Schools and then build a preparation plan around the relevant exam format. Alongside developing strong academic knowledge, we help pupils become familiar with the question styles, time limits, and assessment methods they are most likely to encounter.

1Maths

Building quick mental arithmetic skills, solving word problems, and understanding shapes and graphs.

2English

Learning how to read long texts carefully, find hidden meanings, and master advanced spelling and grammar.

3Verbal-Reasoning

Solving word puzzles, tracking letter codes, and finding matching word pairs.

4Non-Verbal Reasoning

Finding patterns in pictures, looking at how shapes rotate, and solving visual logic puzzles.

Why Families in Ullswater Valley Seek 11 Plus Tutoring Support

Families in Ullswater Valley are increasingly choosing 11 Plus tutoring to ensure their child is fully prepared for the demands of selective school entrance exams. The 11 Plus tests not only English and Maths but also reasoning, vocabulary, accuracy and the ability to work efficiently under timed conditions. These skills are not always taught in depth within the primary curriculum, so many parents seek specialist support to bridge the gap.

Queen Elizabeth Grammar School attracts many high-achieving pupils from across Cumbria. Children need strong preparation and excellent exam performance to achieve a competitive score. It offers only 160 places in Year 7. We work with pupils from local primary schools across the Ullswater area, including Patterdale Church of England Primary School, Stainton C of E Primary School and others, helping children prepare for the entrance assessments required by their chosen grammar schools.

Cumbria has only one grammar school, Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, so there is no county-wide grammar school consortium. Families must complete the school’s registration process before the published deadline to allow their child to sit the entrance test. For September 2027 entry, registration opened on 1 May 2026 and closed on 12 July 2026. Check the Westmorland and Furness Council website for guidance on late applications and any updated admissions information.

  • Our tailored lessons cover English, Maths, Creative writing and exam skills, ensuring every child receives targeted support based on their individual strengths and areas for improvement.
  • We help pupils improve their answering speed, increase accuracy and build the confidence needed to tackle challenging questions and perform their best in timed entrance examinations.

  • School Registration: First, you must complete the entrance test registration form on the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) website, which usually opens in May and closes in July.

Cumbria uses a standardised scoring system in which your child’s raw test score is adjusted for their exact age in months to keep things fair. While there is a minimum qualifying score for consideration, entry is highly competitive.

No, Cumbria does not have a large county-wide consortium because Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) in Penrith is the only selective grammar school in the area.

Yes, it is very challenging because it is the only grammar school in Cumbria, which means hundreds of bright children from all over the Eden Valley and Carlisle apply for a limited number of places. While living in local feeder areas helps, your child still needs to achieve an excellent score on the test to secure a place on the final admissions list.

Our specialised lessons cover all subjects tested in the official Cumbria test:

  • Maths
  • English & Vocabulary
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning
